Cornish Stained Glass in Seal

Just before she retired, Anne was approached by Mark Charter of Cornish Stained Glass, Truro, Cornwall. Last May (2024) he visited Seal church to examine and photograph the wonderful stained glass windows in Seal Church. The results are here.

Mark has been meaning to return ever since, as, whilst Seal is not exactly in Cornwall there are some strong connections with some stained glass windows by John Jennings from there. It’s interesting to see the similarities.

In January 2025 Mark came back and spent a couple of days in Seal again. His findings are interesting …

Here’s the 1905 two-light window showing Christ walking on water at Halsetown, (now part of the St Ives benefice) in Cornwall … and, for comparison, the 1888 three-light window showing the same subject by the same artist. Also the North Aisle and the South East Chapel.

If you click on the ‘Other windows in this church’ (at the bottom of the page) you can see the other windows by Jennings at Halsetown. Chancel East is rather good.

The Blackall pedigree is a work-in-progress.  The Rev’d Blackall seems to have registered the births of quite a few of his children before choosing their names!

With many thanks to Mark for all his hard work – here and at other churches. The quality of the images are truly remarkable. They are better (PNG to be technical) images than we are showing here as we are reducing the images for speed of loading. If you look at the Cornish Stained Glass images you will be able to see far more detail as the images are displayed in many layers (see PNG and Alpha Channel on Wikipedia for example)
